KHARTOUM, Sudan, April 8 (UPI) -- Seven Sudanese military officers were sentenced to prison for their roles in an attempted coup against President Omar al-Bashir, officials said.
The officers, including Brig. Gen. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel-Galil and colonels majors, were given terms of three to five years, the Sudan Tribune reported Sunday.
The seven pleaded guilty to charges of intent and planning to stage a coup in November 2012, an army spokesman said.
Another 13 officers and two non-commissioned officers also were arrested, along with civilians and officers with Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services.
Former NISS Director Salah Gosh is among those charged with involvement in the coup attempt.
Gosh had cooperated with U.S. counter-terrorism efforts following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, the Tribune said.
Bashir fired Gosh in 2009 but later appointed him as a presidential adviser for security. Bashir dismissed him again in 2011 after Gosh argued with one of the president's assistants, the report said.
