Woman saved after writing 'help' message

BUCHAN, Australia, April 7 (UPI) -- A missing Australian woman was found by rescue workers after they saw "help" written in the sand of a riverbank, officials said.

Police in eastern Victoria discovered a vehicle belonging to Lynette Joyce Bond, 68, abandoned along a trail in the Snowy River National Park near the New South Wales border on Saturday, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

A note was left in the car that said it had broken down on Wednesday.

A massive search involving police, rescue crews and volunteer bushwalkers all looking for Bond ensued and came to a close when a helicopter spotted the word "help" written on the banks of the Snowy River. Bond was then seen nearby, officials said.

Bond was airlifted to a hospital for a checkup, but is believed to be in good health, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said.
