KABUL, Afghanistan, April 5 (UPI) -- A U.S. pilot was killed in a nighttime F-16 fighter jet crash in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, NATO officials said.

The pilot's body was recovered, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said in a statement, Khaama Press reported Thursday.

Initial indications were that no insurgents were in the area at the time of crash, the statement said.

F-16 accidents have been rare in Afghanistan, officials said.
