5.4-mag quake centered in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 4 (UPI) -- A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook Afghanistan, Pakistan and India Thursday, seismologists said.

The quake's epicenter was about 173 miles northeast of Kabul in Afghanistan, near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border area, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The newspaper Dawn reported the tremors were felt in many parts of northern Pakistan, including Islamabad.

An Indian Meteorological Department official said the temblor started just after noon local time and lasted about 10 seconds, the Press Trust of India reported. The quake was centered in the Hindukush mountains, he said.

No injuries or property damage were reported, though the quake caused some people to panic, the news service said.
