Brother questioned in Alps slayings

CHESSINGTON, England, March 30 (UPI) -- Investigators have questioned the brother of a victim in the shooting death of four people in the French Alps, police said.

French detectives traveled to Britain to meet Friday with Zaid al-Hilli at his home and discuss the apparent ambush that killed Zaid's brother and three other people in September.

Britain's The Daily Telegraph said al-Hilli came under recent scrutiny after it was discovered he had been involved in a legal dispute with his younger brother, Saad al-Hilli, over their late father's estate.

Saad al-Hilli, 50, was gunned down along with his wife, mother-in-law and a French cyclist along a scenic mountain road near Lake Annecy.

Authorities wanted to question Zaid about an alleged attempt to use an expired credit card to withdraw cash from his late father's Swiss bank account.

Police sources told The Daily Telegraph Zaid was cooperative and denied any role in his brother's slaying.

Investigators have not been able to determine a motive, and have considered the possibility the deaths may have been the result of a random act. Police said they believe the shooter emerged from the forest trail to ambush the family.
