Arrest warrant issued for Egyptian comic

CAIRO, March 30 (UPI) -- Bassem Youssef, the comic called Egypt's Jon Stewart, said Saturday he faces an arrest order for allegedly insulting the president and contempt of religion.

The satirical TV host said he would appear before the prosecutor general Sunday, Daily News Egypt reported.

"The arrest order is true. I will head tomorrow to the prosecutor general's office, unless they send a police vehicle to pick me up," Youssef posted on his Twitter account.

Youssef, likened to Stewart, the host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," has found himself in legal hot water for his frequent on-air criticisms of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Prosecutor General Tala'at Abdallah referred all complaints filed against Youssef to be investigated by Mohamed el-Sayed Khalifa, general lawyer at the prosecutor general's technical office, state-run al-Ahram reported.

Youssef could be jailed while the charges against him are investigated.

Sha'ban Abdel Aleem of the Salafi al-Nour Party, said his organization had not taken a position on the comic's situation.

"No one is above the law. If he is guilty then he should be punished, and if he is not then no one has the right to criticize his work," Aleem said.
