Armorer suspected of stealing police guns

SYDNEY, March 30 (UPI) -- A civilian employee for the police force in New South Wales in Australia was charged Saturday with stealing weapons, ammunition and parts.

Alan James Cumberland, 38, turned himself in, The Daily Telegraph reported. Police had been searching for him since Thursday when his home in the Central Coast area north of Sydney and three others were targeted in organized crime raids.

Cumberland was a senior armorer with the New South Wales police.

Detective Superintendent Ken Finch would not say if police suspect James of selling weapons to criminals. Finch said investigators were still inventorying guns found at his home.
