VATICAN CITY, March 29 (UPI) -- Pope Francis recited the Passion of Christ, the story of the last hours of Jesus, in a Good Friday ceremony in the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica.

The service, before 10,000 congregants, followed a mass Thursday at a youth detention center in Rome, in which the pope ritually washed the feet of 12 inmates, two of whom are Muslims, in an unprecedented version of the traditional pre-Easter ritual, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported.

Later he was to lead a candlelight procession around the 2,000-year-old Colosseum, Rome's iconic Roman amphitheater, to celebrate Via Crucis, the Way of the Cross, Vatican Radio said.

Since Francis was installed as pope 10 days ago, he has focused on an informal style, with messages of humility and helping the poor and needy, CNN noted.
