JIANGSHAN COUNTY, China, March 27 (UPI) -- A bus driver injured when a lamppost went through his window was hailed as a hero for evacuating passengers from his bus, officials in China said.

China Daily of Beijing said the actions of the driver, Mao Zhihao, 44, were captured on the bus's surveillance camera.

Mao was driving the No. 602 bus Wednesday evening from Jiangshan County to Quzhou County in Zhejiang province when a collision in the opposite lane caused a lamppost to fly through the bus driver's window, China Daily reported.

The camera footage showed Mao being hit by the lamppost. Although injured, Mao staggered to his feet, secured the steering wheel and handbrake, evacuated 26 passengers and then called for assistance, China Daily reported.

Mao is being treated for a ruptured liver in a hospital in Jiangshan County, the newspaper said.
