Chihuahua saves girl from pit bull

CHILLIWACK, British Columbia, March 26 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old Canadian girl says she survived an attack by her neighbor's pit bull thanks to her heroic Chihuahua, who mounted a counter-attack.

Leslie Desrochers of Chilliwack, British Columbia, said her daughter Jenna was outside her grandmother's home looking for rabbits when the pit bull attacked. The dog knocked Jenna down and clamped down on her face.

The pit bull's owner said that's when Honey, Jenna's 4-year-old Chihuahua, came to the rescue, The Chilliwack Times reported. The little dog pestered the pit bull enough to draw its attention away from Jenna. When the pit bull let go of the girl to chase Honey, its owner was able to collar it, the newspaper said.

"I thought that she would help me and she did," Jenna said told the Times.

It took doctors 3 hours to put in dozens of stitches to close the wounds and Jenna may need plastic surgery, the Times said.

Honey, on the other hand, escaped unscathed.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police ordered the pit bull destroyed.
