Egypt to extradite Gadhafi regime figures

CAIRO, March 25 (UPI) -- Two officials from Libya's Moammar Gadhafi regime will be returned from Egypt, where they were arrested last week, Egyptian officials said.

Ali Marya, who was Libyan ambassador to Egypt, and Mohamed Ibrahim Mansour, a former finance official, were detained by the Egyptian branch of Interpol and will be handed over to Libya as soon as the legal requirements for extradition are satisfied, the Libya Herald reported Sunday.

Gadhafi, who had ruled the country for 42 years, was killed Oct. 20, 2011.

The two men were arrested March 19 with a Gadhafi cousin and aide, Ahmed Qaddaf al-Dam, who was ordered held for 30 days pending investigations into several charges against him, including allegedly firing on Egyptian police, prosecutors said.

Egyptian officials were awaiting extradition papers for al-Dam, MENA reported.

Gadhafi's widow, Safiya, daughter, Aisha, and sons Muhammad and Hannibal, left Algeria where they had been given a safe haven, The Tripoli Post reported

Abdel-Hamid Bouzaher, Algeria's ambassador to Libya, said the family members left "a long time ago" but he did not provide further details.

Aisha and Hannibal are wanted by Interpol on a request from Libyan authorities.

The family members fled to Algeria in 2011 soon after rebels reached Tripoli during an uprising that ended Moammar Gadhafi's rule.

Another of Gadhafi's sons, Saadi, fled to Niger after the Libyan conflict and has been there since. Gadhafi's son Saif al-Islam was captured in Libya, where he remains imprisoned. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
