Protests called over Egyptian media 'bias'

CAIRO, March 23 (UPI) -- Islamist groups have called for demonstrations against what they call the media's bias after protests against the Muslim Brotherhood in several Egyptian cities.

In online messages, groups called for demonstrating at the Egyptian Media Production City over the news coverage of protests Friday in which about 200 people were injured, Ahram Online reported Saturday.

Some of the Islamist groups called for "besieging" the media complex on Sunday.

Protesters demanding dissolution of the Brotherhood were met by assailants armed with bladed weapons and sticks Friday evening in Alexandria, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

Demonstrators responded by pelting the attackers with stones.

A campaign calling itself "We are sorry Armed Forces" said it had collected 32,000 names on a petition calling for the military to take control of the country until early presidential elections could be held.

On Saturday, protesters sacked a Brotherhood office in Cairo, while the Brotherhood's headquarters in the Nile Delta was set on fire, the BBC reported.

Protesters and Brotherhood supporters threw rocks at each other, and riot police fired tear gas at the groups to disperse them.

Several thousand activists clashed with Brotherhood supporters and police, reportedly setting on fire two buses owned by the Islamists.
