ATHENS, Greece, March 23 (UPI) -- Three of 11 Greek fugitives who broke out of jail following a firefight with guards have been captured, prison officials said.

A search of the area surrounding Trikala prison in central Greece was under way Saturday in the hours after armed men in two trucks pulled alongside the prison Friday night and opened fire with automatic weapons and hand grenades. Two guards were injured.

Helicopter air searches were under way trying to locate the eight remaining fugitives, Ekathimerini said Saturday.
