MILAN, Italy, March 22 (UPI) -- Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Friday requested permission to skip a hearing in an appeal against his 4-year tax fraud sentence.

Berlusconi says he has a "legitimate impediment" to attending Saturday's hearing, a reference to a meeting of his People of Freedom political party, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Berlusconi has frequently filed similar requests in the appeal process in the case against his Mediaset media corporation and in another trial where he was accused of paying for sex with an underage prostitute. Some have been upheld, pushing back dates of verdicts, ANSA said.
