Snow storm closes Canadian schools

MONTREAL, March 19 (UPI) -- Hundreds of thousands of Canadian kids got snow day Tuesday as a late winter storm targeted Quebec and the Maritimes, school officials said.

The closures on the last official day of winter included more than 50 schools in Montreal, where about 6 inches of snow was expected, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Eight to 10 inches was expected in the higher elevations of Quebec.

The storm was forecast to move over the Maritimes overnight, producing a mix of snow, rain and ice pellets and promising a rough commute to work Wednesday morning, the CBC said.

Parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were expected to get 8-10 inches of snow.

The CBC said more snow was in the forecast for the region on Friday.
