Toyota Indonesia plant begins operations

JAKARTA, March 18 (UPI) -- Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp.'s $340 million plant in Indonesia has begun operations, the company said.

The development of the facility in Karawang in West Java reflects Toyota's confidence in Indonesia's growing importance and lays the foundation for a key production base in that country, Takahiro Iwase, Toyota's managing officer, said at the inauguration of the plant, the Jakarta Post reported.

The new facility gives the company four plants in Indonesia with a total capacity of 180,000 vehicles. Toyota's largest Southeast Asia facility is in Thailand, with an annual production capacity of 600,000 vehicles.

"We also plan to develop Indonesia as an auto export base. Our Karawang plants have become indispensable to the future growth of global Toyota," Iwase said.

Initially, the new Karawang plant will produce Toyota's newly launched Etios Valco, which is designed for Indonesian roads and consumers, the report said.
