LONDON, March 18 (UPI) -- A British lawmaker has accepted "very substantial damages" and an apology after a reporter from The Sun hacked her phone to read private text messages.
A lawyer for Labor MP Siobhan McDonagh said the lawmaker was content not to pursue any further action against the News Corp.-owned tabloid, saying "the claimant has obtained significant protection and vindication of her privacy rights and she is therefore content not to pursue this matter any further."
McDonagh was notified by police in June last year she had been a victim of phone hacking by a Sun reporter in October 2010, the Daily Telegraph said Monday. She is one of thousands of people from all walks of life have been connected to the massive phone hacking scandal at The Sun and News of the World, two British newspapers owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch. News of the World has since ceased publication.
A lawyer for The Sun conceded there was "serious misuse of her private information" and offered a "universal apology to the claimant for what happened."
