GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador, March 17 (UPI) -- Investigators in Ecuador said driver fatigue may have played a roll in a bus crash that killed 12 passengers this weekend.

The other 25 people aboard were injured when the bus hit a guardrail on a bridge and crashed upside down into a river while on a trip to the city of Guayaquil.

The possibility the driver fell asleep at the wheel was under consideration as a cause of the crash. Another possibility was the driver was inexperienced and lost control while passing another vehicle, said a translated report from La Hora in Quito, Ecuador.

The operator of the bus apparently had all of the necessary permits and was in compliance with government regulations, officials told La Hora.
