Adly gets retrial in profiteering case

CAIRO, March 17 (UPI) -- An Egyptian appeals court ruled Sunday former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly will be retried on charges of profiteering and money laundering.

Adly was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined $721,000 in May 2011 for allowing companies to use ministry-owned lands illegally, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

He was sentenced in February to three years in prison for charges of forcing conscripts and policemen to do agricultural and construction work on land he owned. Whether Adly will be retried for the February conviction was not reported.

A date for Adly's profiteering and money laundering retrial has not been set.

Meanwhile, Adly, along with former President Hosni Mubarak, face a retrial April 13 on charges they were responsible for the deaths of protesters. The two were sentenced to life in prison in June for failing to stop the killings of peaceful protesters, but the court in January accepted the men's appeal and agreed to a retrial.

More than 800 protesters died and 6,000 were injured during protests two years ago that led to the downfall of Mubarak's government, Gulf News reported.
