JAKARTA, March 16 (UPI) -- A Nigerian convicted in 2004 in Indonesia of trafficking heroin has been put to death by firing squad.
Adami Wilson was executed Thursday night, the Jakarta Globe reported. The Nigerian Embassy told the newspaper it had not been officially notified about the execution.
Authorities said Wilson continued to traffic drugs after he was convicted and sentenced to death. In an interview with a magazine, he said he had heard from other inmates it was possible to get a death sentence commuted to life in prison for a $103,000 bribe and he was trying to make enough money to pay it.
Wilson was the first person to be executed in Nigeria since 2008, when three men involved in the 2002 Bali bombings were put to death. The attorney general says nine more are scheduled to take place this year.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited Nigeria last month and signed a memorandum of understanding on drug trafficking with President Goodluck Jonathan.
Inspector Gen. Anang Iskandar, head of the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency, said Jonathan did not make any special request to commute the death sentences of 13 Nigerians awaiting execution in Indonesia. But a spokesman for Jonathan told the Globe the president asked that all executions be stayed until the two countries could reach an agreement on exchanging prisoners.
