Egypt's Brotherhood slams U.N. declaration

CAIRO, March 14 (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood released a statement in Egypt condemning a U.N. declaration on women's rights, claiming the document violates Islamic Law.

The declaration, "End Violence Against Women," has yet to be ratified and is being discussed as part of the 57th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, Ahram Online said.

"This is a misleading title," the Brotherhood said of the document in a statement on its official Facebook page. "The document includes articles that contradict the principles of Islam ... and aim to destroy the family."

The group said it deems three articles most offensive: an article that gives women the freedom to choose the gender of their partners, another that discusses the provision of contraceptives for teenagers, and an article that provides equal rights for homosexuals and protection for prostitutes.

"The Muslim Brotherhood urges the leaders of Islamic countries and their U.N. representatives to reject and condemn this document," the group said in the statement.
