MUSCAT, Oman, March 14 (UPI) -- A teenager who disappeared in Oman for 26 hours, says he faked the kidnapping because he feared his father would punish him for low scores on school exams.

Noel Sam Abraham, 16, went missing from a supermarket in Muscat Friday and was feared abducted, Gulf News reported.

"After 26 hours, we were informed that the boy was found behind the same hypermarket with his hand and legs tied," said Sulaiman Al Rashidi, head of criminal investigations at the Ruwi police station.

However, police soon found out that the boy was lying.

"In his initial statement, the boy had told us that three people had kidnapped him but his version had a lot of contradictions, so we continued asking him and finally he confessed that he had run away and was not kidnapped," Rashidi said.

"There was no one involved in the boy's disappearance, he staged his own escape," Al Rashidi said, adding that the boy told police that he believed his father would punish him for he poor grades he received on his 10th standard examinations.

The boy was held at the Juvenile Home in the al-Bustan area on unspecified charges, police said.
