LONDON, March 12 (UPI) -- An American who became a "well-known character" in London's fashionable Mayfair district was found beaten to death in his apartment, police said Monday.
Police said Robert Troyan's cleaning woman discovered his body Friday on the kitchen floor, The Daily Telegraph reported.
A building employee said a man working in an apartment above Troyan's heard the woman "screaming her head off."
A medical examiner said Troyan, 63, died of head injuries.
Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield said investigators believe Troyan was killed Friday sometime before 4 p.m. He urged anyone who knows Troyan to give police whatever information they have.
"He was a very well-known character in Mayfair, whom friends describe as kind and extremely generous," Duffield said.
Friends said Troyan grew up rich in the United States. He settled in London after meeting Anthony Feldman in 1983.
Feldman, a well-known architect and interior designer, died of pancreatic cancer in 2005. He and Troyan were allowed to become partners in a civil union days before the law took effect because he was about to die.
