CORK, Ireland, March 9 (UPI) -- An Irish farmer and the 3-year-old daughter he drowned before taking his own life were buried Friday in a single coffin.

A requiem mass was held at St. Mary's Church in Schull where Martin McCarthy, 50, and his wife Rebecca were regular communicants, The Irish Times reported. The Rev. Anthony O'Mahony, who performed the last rites when the bodies of McCarthy and 3-year-old Clarissa were pulled from the sea early Wednesday, was the celebrant.

"We never know what goes on in a person's head -- if we did, maybe we wouldn't be here," O'Mahony said. "Clarissa spent all her short life at Foilnamuck and in her 3 1/2 years on this Earth, brought great joy and great happiness, not just to Martin and Rebecca but to the lives of all the people who met her."

Rebecca McCarthy told police her husband and daughter were missing when she returned to the farm on the coast of western Cork from a visit to friends Tuesday evening. Investigators believe that after his wife left McCarthy walked into the sea holding Clarissa.
