RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 6 (UPI) -- Palestinian students prevented British Consul General Vincent Fean from lecturing at Birzeit University near Ramallah, forcing him to leave the campus.
On his arrival at the West Bank university campus Tuesday, Fean was met by Palestinian protesters who heckled him and protested Britain's support of Israel, Ynetnews.com reported.
At a meeting with university President Khalil al-Hindy, it was decided Fean should leave the campus surrounded by security guards. Students attacked him and struck his vehicle breaking a mirror, Ma'an News Agency reported.
"Sir Vincent had hoped to underline Britain's deep commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state and the urgency of progress on the peace process in 2013," a spokesman for the British Consulate General in east Jerusalem told Ynetnews.com. "Sadly, such a dialogue was not possible on this occasion."
University sources confirmed Fean left the campus because of the protest, Palestine News Network said.
