Non-lethal round fired at Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, March 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. military Tuesday acknowledged the shooting of a non-lethal round at detainees on a recreational facility at the Guantanamo, Cuba, detention facility.

Navy Capt. Robert Durand, the prison spokesman, said a watchtower guard correctly followed crowd dispersal procedures in the Jan. 2 incident in firing "one non-lethal round" similar to those "used by the Bureau of Prisons."

The military response came after information regarding the incident was included in letters from detainees, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Yemeni prisoner Bashir al Marwaleah wrote, "We are in danger. One of the soldiers fired on one of the brothers a month ago," in a letter received Feb. 22 by the New York law firm handling his unlawful detention suit.

The incident occurred on a soccer field in the recreational facility used by guards and detainees, the newspaper said.
