ENUGU, Nigeria, March 4 (UPI) -- Nigerian police say they were searching Monday for gunmen who killed a regional police official and wounded two other people near the official's home.
Police Commissioner Chinwike Asadu, head of the Kwara State command of the Nigerian Police Force, died Saturday night when gunmen in a bus attacked him as he approached his home in the city of Enugu, in southern Nigeria, Leadership Newspapers reported.
Asadu's driver and a police orderly also were shot and critically injured.
Asadu had left his protection detail at his residential compound while he dropped off a visitor and was about 100 yards from his residence when they noticed a bus following them. The gunmen opened fire before he could reach his compound.
The attackers left the scene before the commissioner's escort team inside the compound could respond.
Asadu was only recently appointed to his position.
