HAVANA, March 4 (UPI) -- Colombian lawmakers say they have traveled to peace talks with FARC guerrillas in Cuba to consider allowing the rebel group to take part in politics.
Humberto de la Calle, the Colombian government's chief negotiator, says the government and rebels have come to an agreement on the biggest obstacle in the talks, agricultural reform, Colombia Reports said Sunday.
Senate President Roy Barreras, a strong supporter of the talks, met with President Juan Manuel Santos Saturday before traveling to Cuba to discuss FARC's possible role in the country's political process should the rebels agree to demobilize and disarm.
That decision could come only after reaching agreement on agriculture and land use.
The negotiators' hope to finalize talks in time for the rebels' possible inclusion in the 2014 elections.
FARC is considered a terrorist organization by Colombia, the United States and Europe.
