HAIFA, Israel, March 3 (UPI) -- Israel submitted a complaint to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force saying three Syrian mortar shells exploded within its borders, officials said.

The Israeli army decided not to respond to the mortar fire, Channel 2 said, adding no one was injured and no damage was reported. Soldiers discovered the fallen shells in an open field in the southern Golan Heights, near the border with Syria, the TV news said. The mortar fire appeared to be the result of fighting between Syrian army forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and rebel forces.

Israel Radio said it was the first time Syrian mortars fell in the southern Golan Heights since the eruption of violence between Assad loyalists and rebels began in March 2011.

A Syrian tank shell exploded inside Israel Wednesday, causing no damages or injuries, Ynetnews.com said.
