New Bangladesh rioting kills nine

BOGRA, Bangladesh, March 3 (UPI) -- Crowds in Bangladesh urged on by announcements broadcast from mosques flooded the streets of Bogra Sunday, leaving at least nine people dead, authorities said.

Activists from the Shibir and Jamaat movements stormed police stations in the city and blocked repair crews trying fix a damaged railroad line.

The violence was the latest incident since Delwar Hoasain Sayedee, a leader of the Jamaat-Shibir, was sentenced to death last week for war crimes. At least 40 people across Bangladesh have died in the violence.

At least three people were killed Sunday when outnumbered police opened fire on a crowd that attacked one of the Bogra police stations, the commander told BD24.com. "Three were killed on the spot," the commander said.

Several fires were set, but some could not be reached because of roadblocks that prevented firefighters from getting into the area. A rail line damaged in the rioting remained shut down after protesters turned back a repair crew despite a police escort.
