Nam Jae-joon, a former Army chief of staff, Nam had been teaching at Seoul's Seokyeong University. Nam was a career soldier who was also chief director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the deputy commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command.
Nam was a top foreign policy adviser on Park's presidential campaign, Yonhap News Agency said.
The newly created agency's primary function is to monitor actions in North Korea.
