2 guilty of torturing, killing elderly man

NOTTINGHAM, England, March 1 (UPI) -- Two young men were convicted Thursday of killing a retiree in eastern England after torturing him with boiling water to get him to turn over his money.

Rocky Curtis, 25, and Robert Holmes, 24, both of Wisbech, were scheduled to be sentenced Friday in Nottingham Crown Court for the murder of Sonny Grey of Lincoln, the Lincolnshire Echo reported.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Morrison of the East Midlands Police major crime team said the verdict showed the "jury system worked."

"They clearly are guilty and these two are very brutal, cruel men," he said. "I've rarely seen brutality of this type and rarely against an elderly man."

Grey, 70, was killed in his home in 2011, suffering 46 wounds. Investigators said his killers were after money they believed he had hidden under the floor.

Curtis's older brother, who was also charged with the killing, died before trial.

Relatives of the two men wept at the verdict. One was taken out of the courtroom after crying out: "Not as quick as that. How can you send my baby away? He never did it."
