LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa has been ousted from power in a no-confidence vote spurred by a bad economy and allegations of corruption, officials say.

The tiny republic faces an unemployment rate of more than 12 percent with an economy in one of the worst contractions of any member states of the European Union, the EUobserver reported Thursday.

Jansa's coalition government crumbled Wednesday when two other parties abandoned it after the state's anti-grant agency charged the prime minister had hidden about $275,000 in personal assets to avoid paying taxes.

Some 20,000 people demonstrated in early February against political corruption, high unemployment and reductions in social benefits.

Alenka Bratusek, 42, is the new prime minister. She served six years in the ministry of finance and becomes Slovenia's first woman head of government.
