JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A court in Saudi Arabia ruled that a man who physically assaulted his mother will remain in jail until she forgives him, officials said.

The prisoner will also be given 200 lashes for abusing his mother and breaking her arm, the court said.

The mother approached police and told officers her son, who is in his 30's, had beaten her several times, Gulf News reported.

She presented a medical certificate supporting her claims.

Gulf News said the mother wept during court but said she needed authorities to discipline her son for threatening her life.

The son admitted he beat his mother for favoring his sister during a disagreement, Gulf News reported.

The suspected is to be whipped on 10 separate days in public areas, the court said.
