West Bank teachers plan strike

Feb. 23, 2013 at 6:21 PM   |   Comments

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- West Bank teachers announced Saturday they will walk out next week and remain on strike until they have an agreement with the Palestinian Authority.

Bassam Naim, a spokesman for the teachers' union, told Ma'an News Agency teachers will be in school but will not hold class. He said the job action will start with a sit-in Tuesday afternoon outside the offices of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Ramallah and continue Wednesday morning.

Public employees in the West Bank have received only partial paychecks in recent months and occasionally have not been paid at all. Naim said recent statements by Palestinian Authority officials have shown they have no respect for teachers.
