Sheik warns Hezbollah to leave apartments

Feb. 22, 2013 at 11:35 AM

ABRA, Lebanon, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A Salafist sheik warned he would remove Hezbollah members at southern Lebanon apartments from which he said his movements were being monitored.

Sheik Ahmad Assir, speaking during Friday prayers at a mosque in Abra, east of Sidon, told 1,000 worshippers that armed members of Hezbollah in at least two nearby apartments were keeping him under surveillance.

Assir, himself armed, threatened to empty the apartments "even if we have to do it by force," The (Beirut) Daily Star reported.

Reports that Assir would storm the apartments led Lebanese army troops and riot police to surround the buildings.

Assir said thousands of people from around Lebanon were willing to help him drive out the Hezbollah members if authorities did not act.
