ROME, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Italians head to the polls Sunday to choose a new Parliament and surveys indicate support for center-left candidate Pier Luigi Bersani may be waning.

Bersani, the Democratic Party candidate, may be seeing his popularity wind down as former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's campaign, behind the People of Freedom center-right coalition, has picked up steam with a series of media-savvy performances, Euronews reported.

Outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, who was put in place after Berlusconi left office, is running for re-election on a centrist ticket but there is speculation that he will likely join Bersani's Cabinet if the center-left candidate should win, Euronews said.

Comedian Beppe Grillo, who is running on his Five Star Movement ticket, has gained popularity by attacking his opponents, and is polling third, Euronews said.

Voting for the 630 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the 315 senators of the Italian Parliament will begin Sunday. The party that gains the most seats will be asked for form a government with its leader as prime minister.
