Awards will be given to individuals, local authorities, emergency response teams, firefighters, rescue workers and others who showed "courage, dedication, professionalism and endurance under strenuous conditions," Russian Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov said Thursday.
Chelyabinsk Gov. Mikhail Yurevich earlier asked that Chelyabinsk residents report instances of heroism during the meteorite strike, RIA Novosti reported.
On Friday, Chelyabinsk city was hit by a meteorite that caused a shock wave that shattered windows and damaged walls in 7,420 buildings and injured more than 1,500 people. About $33 million in damage was caused.
