KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- An Afghan soldier who was celebrated by the Taliban as an insurgent for killing a U.S. soldier last year was killed in a raid, coalition forces said Monday.

The International Security Assistance Force said the soldier-turned-insurgent and another militant were killed Wednesday during a security operation in the Ghaziabad district of Kunar province, Khaama Press reported.

ISAF officials said one of the two victims, identified as Mahmood, was responsible for the death of a U.S. soldier during a so-called insider attack in Kunar province in May 2012.

NATO said insider attacks killed 61 coalition troops in 45 incidents last year.
