Long list of issues at new Berlin airport

BERLIN, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Inspectors have listed some 20,000 construction flaws in the new Berlin airport, which will likely not open for business for another year.

The flaws range from small items such as broken tiles up to more-serious issues such as faulty ventilation.

An airport official told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag the problems have been given a priority ranking and will be methodically documented and corrected to ensure transparency for the project.

Experts believe it will be at least 2014 before the airport opens and have in the meantime allocated funding to upgrade the aging Tegel airport in western Berlin, which the local.de said would have to shoulder the capital's air-traffic burdens along with the Schoenfeld airport in eastern Berlin.
