MOSCOW, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A police officer was attacked with a baseball bat in front of Moscow's St. Basil's cathedral on Red Square on Thursday, officials said.

The attack happened about noon, The Moscow News reported.

The officer noticed a man carrying a baseball bat and approached him, a police spokesman said. The man then hit the officer several times with the bat.

"The assailant was detained and handed over to a team of psychiatrists while the policeman sought medical assistance," the spokesman added.
