MELBOURNE, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Two firefighters died while battling a bush fire near the tiny town of Harrietville in Australia's southern state of Victoria, officials said.

A man and a woman were killed when a tree fell on their vehicle, The Age reported Wednesday.

The firefighters, from the Department of Environment and Sustainability, were helping to contain a 66,700-acre fire in a remote northeastern area of the state.

Emergency personnel were delayed in responding to the accident for several hours because of the ongoing fire and mountainous terrain.

The victims were the third and fourth firefighters to die fighting bush fires in Victoria this year.
