ISTANBUL, Turkey, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A court in Turkey has sentenced 16 college students to three years imprisonment each for throwing stones at police officers during a protest.

Today's Zaman said the students are studying at Adrahan University and were arrested in November after participating in an unauthorized demonstration.

The students were supporting inmates on hunger strikes in prisons and were also asking for an end to the isolation of the Kurdistan Workers' Party Chief Abdullah Ocalan.

Today's Zaman said police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the demonstration, and the students responded by throwing stones.

Three police officers were injured.

The students were charged with "committing a crime on behalf of a terrorist organization without being a member of the organization," Today's Zaman reported, and were sentenced Tuesday.
