YOKOSUKA, Japan, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A U.S. attack submarine's commander and executive officer were relieved of their duties Sunday for letting a periscope hit another ship, the Navy said.

Navy officials in Japan said in a release that the nuclear-powered USS Jacksonville's commanding officer, Cmdr. Nathan Sukols, and the sub's executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Lauren Allen, were relieved of their duties after a non-judicial disciplinary proceeding called an Admiral's Mast held in Manama, Bahrain.

The periscope incident occurred Jan. 10 in the Persian Gulf. The Navy said there were no injuries in the accident and no indication the other, unidentified vessel was damaged as it continued on its way.

The sub has two periscopes. The one that was damaged has been repaired, the Navy said.

Sukols and Allen have been reassigned to administrative duties in Hawaii.
