YSTAD, Sweden, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A man in Sweden was sentenced to 15 months in prison for throwing his 9-month-old son at police officers attempting to arrest him.

"The child went in a loop through the air," one officer said during an investigation.

He added an alert officer caught the boy by the leg before he struck the pavement in the garage where the unidentified 42-year-old father was arrested for allegedly abusing his girlfriend and several of their children, the newspaper Metro reported.

The Ystad District Court had previously thrown out one of the charges against the man, but the charge was reinstated by a court of appeal, noting the significant risk for the child in the incident, the Swedish news agency TT reported Monday.

Following the appeals court ruling, the man's sentence was increased from 12 to 15 months for endangering the child's life, TT said.
