CAIRO, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Egyptian military officials said a joint training exercise with U.S. troops will proceed despite Egypt's ongoing political strife.

Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he met with American Ambassador Anne Patterson and Central Command chief James Mattis to reaffirm plans for Operation Bright Star, an upcoming joint military training venture between the two countries, as-Masry al-Youm reported Monday.

"The armed forces carry out several joint exercises with friendly countries in order to improve technical development at the level of individual soldiers, and get up to date regarding the military equipment used in those countries," Egyptian military spokesman Mohamed Ali said.

The dates for the joint exercise were not reported.
