DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A United Arab Emirates student convicted of kidnapping and raping his fiancee had his life sentence reduced Sunday to 10 years in prison, officials said.

Gulf News said the 24-year-old Emirati man, F.Q., argued that sex with his fiancee was consensual and asked that he be acquitted or have his sentence reduced.

The judge, Eisa al-Sharif, reduced the life imprisonment to 10 years in jail, Gulf News reported.

The man's fiancee told prosecutors F.Q. beat and raped her and also took photographs of her naked, but the defendant's lawyer argued the woman visited F.Q.'s house willingly and consented to sex.

Gulf News said the reasons why the sentence was reduce to 10 years was unclear, and the official judgment will take two weeks to be typed.

F.Q. has 30 days to appeal Sunday's judgment, Gulf News said.
