YouTube banned for month in Egypt

CAIRO, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An Egyptian court banished YouTube for a month after the website refused to take down a video considered anti-Islamic.

The ban applies to any website that helped share the 13-minute film, "The Innocence of Islam," Ahram Online reported Saturday.

A lawsuit filed in September by Egyptian attorney Hamed Salem had asked for the verdict, charging the film distorted the image of Islam and the religion's founder, Prophet Muhammad, in the minds of children.

Protests against the film left 70 people dead in several Muslim countries.

The alleged makers of the film were given death sentences in absentia by an Egyptian court Jan. 29.

Pakistan has blocked YouTube since September after the site refused to remove the video.
