GATINEAU, Ontario, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Canadian Sen. Patrick Brazeau faces possible suspension after being charged Friday with assault and sexual assault, officials say.
The Quebec senator appeared calm during a brief court appearance in Gatineau after spending the night in jail, Postmedia News reported.
Police went to Brazeau's home in Gatineau Thursday morning after receiving a 911 call about domestic violence, The Globe and Mail reported.
In a statement, police said the case was being reviewed by the director or criminal prosecutions, but provided no additional information.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper removed Brazeau from the Conservative caucus Thursday following the senator's arrest.
Brazeau, an aboriginal Canadian, has been a vocal critic of many First Nation leaders. He has been under investigation over allegations he misused $21,000 in housing allowances.
Brazeau maintains his innocence. He has claimed in the past he has been targeted because of his ethnic background.
