DONGSHANTOU, China, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A baby died after being hit by a car driven by Chinese officials collecting a fine from the baby's family for breaking the one-child rule, China Daily said.

A delegation of 11 officials from the Ruian Town birth control office visited Chen Liandi, 39, and his wife, Li Yuhong, Monday in Dongshantou village near Wenzhou, the Ruian Municipal Propaganda Department said.

NBC said the officials wanted Li to return with them to their offices to discuss the couple's options of paying a fine for having a second child. State media said Li left the couple's 13-month-old baby in the arms of her husband, but after the group got back into their cars to leave, the boy was found crushed underneath a car, NBC reported. How the baby came to be under or near one of the cars was not reported.

The boy was taken to the Third People's Hospital in Ruian but could not be revived.

Users of the Chinese social media website Weibo have demanded more information about the incident and said the explanation given by Ruian officials is too vague.
